I rarely go out to London, but these were a few hours I thoroughly enjoyed.
Combining the Tutankhamun experience with a cable car ride over the Thames to Greenwich. The Tutankhamun virtual show runs until 29. June.
My knowledge of ancient Egyptian culture and civilisation is very basic- I hardly know my Ra from my Osiris or her 42 judges. I had heard of Howard Carter and vaguely remember what makes Tutankhamon’s grave chamber so special: it was discovered relatively late, ie without a long period of local thieves and adventurers having sifted and pilfered through it before being discovered by Western explorers. The immersive exhibition is as much entertaining as it is instructive about the life & culture around the fertile land of the Nile in the three thousand years before Common Era. WE left the Excel exhibition after almost 2 hours and 30 minutes. It varies- depending on the time you choose to spend at the various sections.

General guide to the location:
The nearest station is Docklands Light Railway ( DLR) ‘CUSTOM HOUSE
The most useful connection is probably the DLR via West Ham ( on the green District line and the C2C line from Fenchurch Street) or the Elizabeth line from Liverpool Street to CUSTOM HOUSE next to the EXCEL Hall.
I hadn’t been to this part of the Isle of Dogs for some years. ca 300 yards from the Excel hall is the cable car base station. (see map above) Just walk past the SUNBURN hotel Yacht and the Good Hotel’ and you are there.
The IFS Cloud Cable Car is a cable car route over the River Thames in east London between the Greenwich Peninsula, on the south bank of the River Thames, and the Royal Docks on the north bank. It opened in June 2012
view from the cable car: the Excel hall borders the City airport
View from the Cable car to the East: Thames Barrier:
Below: view back to the North Station of the JFS cable car, the Sunburn Hotel Yacht and the Excel Hall to the right..
If you have the time, you can- once in Greenwich- pick up the Thames Path National Trail westbound, and head to Greenwich. Or you take the Jubilee line from North Greenwich to West Ham/Stratford or west to London Bridge etc.
